On the question of challenging Greg Abbott (R) in the 2018 Texas gubernatorial contest, Wendy Davis says she already hung up her Mizunos. The failed 2014 gubernatorial candidate is the latest Texas Democrat to apparently bow out of consideration.

No major Texas Democratic candidate is currently willing to lead the 2018 ticket. Davis was edging closer to “no” over recent weeks, the San Antonio Express-News reports. At first, the former state senator said she was “99 percent” not going to run. Last week, she said it would take “a brainwash, maybe,” to get her to run.

On Tuesday, Davis made her position almost a certainty saying, “I probably should have said it might take a lobotomy.”

After becoming infamous for a pro-abortion Texas Senate filibuster in 2013, Davis gave up her senate seat to run for governor against then-Attorney General Abbott.

Abbott easily handled Davis by a margin of 59 to 39, Breitbart Texas reported at the time. Since then, Davis has struggled to keep her name in the limelight to leverage a 2018 redux. She currently holds a leadership position with an organization dubbed Deeds Not Words, a “project” of the charitable organization, the New Venture Fund.

In 2016, Hillary Clinton sought Davis’ advice on how to win the Lone Star State’s 38 Electoral College votes. Clinton did not fall as short as Davis. At that time, Davis told the Huffington Post “I miss the ring. I miss it very much.”

The Huffington Post said the path for a Davis victory would be “difficult,” acknowledging the the state’s lasting conservative leanings.

Earlier this week, Hollywood announced that Sandra Bullock will play Wendy Davis in a new film, Let Her Speak, Breitbart News’ Dr. Susan Berry reported earlier this week. The film will highlight the infamous 11-hour filibuster where Davis managed to stall a bill that would ban some abortions in Texas. While Davis managed to run out the clock of the special session, then Governor Rick Perry immediately called another special session and the bill became law.

In September, U.S. Representative Joaquín Castro (D) was said to be considering a run for his party’s nomination, the Dallas Morning News reported. However, analysts predict the run is unlikely because Castro would be trading a safe House seat for an abundantly risky statewide race.

Matt Angle, who serves as director of the Democrat research group, the Lone Star Project, offered a surprising perspective on the state of the 2018 ticket.

“We will have a candidate for governor that Democrats can feel good about,” he told the Dallas paper. “Whether they will have a path to victory, I don’t know.”
