A mother in Houston, TX is facing a criminally negligent homicide charge after she was caught on camera running over her three-year-old son with an SUV.
According to a report by 6 ABC, police originally called the incident involving Lexus Stagg, 26, an “unfortunate accident” because the mother told authorities the child ran behind the vehicle as she backed out of her parking spot.
However, surveillance video eventually showed the boy was hit while the vehicle was going forward. The child was reportedly caught under one of the tires and Stagg allegedly continued driving, running over the child again.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office believes Stagg was playing a game of “chicken” with her child.
“Every parent has an obligation to protect their children, even from themselves,” District Attorney Kim Ogg told 6 ABC. “Cars aren’t toys and playing chicken with your kids isn’t a game.”
Stagg was arrested on Friday and could face up to 10 years in prison.
