A week after WE tv announced the upcoming release of Sex Box, a censorship advocacy group is petitioning to have the channel removed from cable subscription bundles.

Parents Television Council is launching a national petition to demand that the WE tv be removed from subscription lineups over plans to broadcast content they say “exceeds the limits of decency.”

PTC president Tim Winter said in a statement: “In order for a child to watch the Disney Channel, her parents must now also pay for a live sex show on WE tv. Something is terribly, horribly broken in the marketplace when an industry is capable of making that happen.”

Winter asserted, “‘Sex Box’ should never see the light of day on basic cable,” and the series will “only cause a further erosion of standards on broadcast and basic television.”

The group has also pledged to hold advertisers accountable.

WE tv president Marc Juris released a statement at the time the network announced its decision to pick up the program. He said:

Sex Box is one of the most unique and compelling show concepts we’ve ever seen, and we can’t wait to bring it to WE tv. Our featured couples will get a once-in-a-lifetime experience, while our viewers will get the kind of bold, break-through-the-clutter programming they increasingly associate with WE tv.

The “sex box” on the series is actually an 8ft x 11ft soundproof enclosure, which will afford couples enough privacy to have sex away from cameras. The couple will then discuss their issues with a panel of “experts.”

Based on the successful U.K. series of the same name, Sex Box is scheduled to debut on WE tv Feb. 27.
