Fans and friends of the late recording artist known as “The Jacka” took to social media and airwaves on Tuesday to mourn his loss after he died from a fatal gunshot wound to the head in Oakland on Monday night. Although he never achieved national fame, to many in the Bay Area, Dominic Newton, 37, was considered a musical legend.
Newton’s violent death “is horribly devastating for everyone. He’s a musical legend,” his publicist and longtime friend Portia Jackson, 34, told the Contra Costa Times. He was reportedly shot at 8:15 p.m. while rapping with several friends inside of a van that was parked on 94th Avenue. He was the only person shot.
A makeshift memorial with paper hearts, candles, flowers, bottles of liquor and other mementos were placed where he was shot. On social media, he was remembered by those who admired him for his work:
