It’s clear that Hollywood (and Hollywood money) will play a big role in the Congressional race to succeed Rep. Henry Waxman in the 33rd District.
Marianne Williamson may be racking up an impressive list of celebrity endorsements, but one candidate leads the rest in opening up Hollywood’s checkbooks, and it’s not who you’d think. According to a report from The Wrap, Matt Miller leads all candidates in Hollywood fundraising, with almost $68,000 raised, beating second-highest Hollywood fundraiser Wendy Greuel by about $30,000.
Among Miller’s more prominent Hollywood contributors are writer-producer Roberto Orci, Star Trek director and Lost creator J.J. Abrams, and former Paramount Studios CEO Sherry Lansing.
Many would have expected Greuel to lead the Hollywood money race, as she is a former executive at DreamWorks and has long enjoyed strong Hollywood support.
In an earlier report from The Wrap, Greuel reiterated: “I continue to have amazing support from the entertainment industry. My support is from people at DreamWorks, Rob Reiner, the Meyers, Cindy and Alan Horn.”
Miller, a radio show host and journalist, explained the shift of Hollywood money to his campaign: “I think Wendy has a core of support who’s been with her for years, many of whom remain with her, and many of whom are disillusioned. I know some of her supporters are coming to my campaign.”
The Wrap’s report represents more good news for Miller’s campaign, coming on the heels of a recent endorsement for Miller by the editorial board of the Los Angeles Times, which many expected would go to Greuel or the other establishment Democratic candidate, state Sen. Ted Lieu. That endorsement complicates the 33rd District race, in which ten Democrats are fighting to gain ground against the strong Independent Marianne Williamson and the surging Republican Elan S. Carr.
