The nephew of former President John F. Kennedy, Bobby Shriver, will square off with former Democratic state senator Sheila Kuehl in November for a spot on the the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
On Tuesday, Kuehl and Shriver qualified for the fall ballot by coming in first and second, respectively, in a 3rd district primary that included six other candidates. The district spans most of the San Fernando Valley and the upscale regions of Beverly Hills, West Los Angeles, Pacific Palisades, and Malibu.
Kuehl, the first openly gay member of the California state legislature and well known by many baby boomers for her role as Zelda on the sixty’s TV Program The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, garnered 36 percent (43,348) of the vote.
Former Santa Monica Mayor Shriver collected 29 percent (34,509) of the vote, which was partly attributed to his snagging key celebrity endorsements, including director Stephen Spielberg and Seinfeld creator Larry David.
The district had been supervised by popular Democrat Zev Yaroslavsky, who was forced to give up his seat after twenty-three years because of a 2002 law which imposed term limits.
