Gov. Brown Signs Bill Allowing 'Temporary' Firearm Confiscation

California Governor Jerry Brown has signed AB 1014, the legislation allowing “temporary” confiscation of firearms via “Gun Violence Restraining Orders” from persons “determined by the courts to be a threat to themselves or others.”

Breitbart News previously reported that the legislation containing “Gun Violence Restraining Orders” was put forth by State Assembly members Nancy Skinner and Das Williams, both Democrats, following Elliot Rodger’s May 23rd Santa Barbara attack.

The new law allows families to petition a court for the seizure of guns from a family member, and then empowers police to confiscate firearms from that family member.

According to the Los Angeles Times, state senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) praised Brown for signing the measure: “As a result of the action that [Gov. Brown] has taken today, we are able to say that the rampage in Isla Vista produced not just terrible tragedy but also positive changes for our state and community.”

Breitbart News previously reported that even if AB 1014 had been law in May 2014–and even if it were a sound law–Rodger would have likely still killed at least three people because he killed three of his six victims with a knife, not a gun.
