Afghanistan: the Meaning of Mattis

Very important news in filling the gap created at US Central Command by Gen. Petraeus moving to lead US and NATO forces in Afghanistan,

Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis has been picked to take over U.S. Central Command, the Pentagon announced on Thursday.

Mattis would replace Gen. David Petraeus, who is now in Afghanistan as the U.S. and NATO’s top military officer there.

There is no other officer who is better or arguably more qualified to be Petraeus’ commander than General James Mattis, USMC. Ever more so, there is no better team DOD could offer than Gates-Mattis-Petraeus to counter the horrible POLMIL instincts of the President and Vice President.

That is the DOD varsity team – and probably the one that has the best chance to talk the CINC away from the JUL 2011 withdraw start date mistake.

DOD has its best team in the field – now we need the right leadership from the Executive and Legislative Branch to nurture the strategic patience this conflict needs.
