On Feb. 25, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano warned that the pending sequester cuts will make the U.S. more vulnerable to terrorist attacks.
Napolitano claimed, “I don’t think we can maintain the same level of security with sequester compared to without sequester.”
She said sequester cuts to DHS, “the Department of Justice and the Department of Defense, would have real impacts on the robustness of our defensive posture.”
Napolitano is part of a broader White House effort to pressure House Members into supporting a compromise deal to avoid sequester.
In response to this, Republicans say Obama is simply “trying to frighten the American people over sequester with scare tactics.”
Republicans would do well to remind the American people that Obama owns sequester, should it happen. The president is the one who signed sequester cuts into law on August 2, 2011, while just a few months later he said he would veto any effort to get rid of them.
