Iran and Russia Strengthen Relationship over Syria and Iraq

Iranian and Russian foreign officials met in Moscow on Monday to discuss relations between the countries and how to expand their alliance. The main topics were Syria and Iraq.

“Relations between Iran and Russia are on the good level. Despite progress in bilateral relations, the situation in the region leaves much to be desired,” said Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian. “Certain countries of the region support Takfirists (radical Islamists). These countries should take a constructive position or they will reap the rewards of their policy.”

The two sides agreed they must take every diplomatic measure possible to stop the bloodshed in Syria. The country has been in a civil war since March 2011, and over 160,000 people have been killed.

ISIS is currently wreaking havoc and murder across Iraq. On June 29, they announced Islamic caliphate in an area between Iraq and Syria. The name of the area is “The Islamic State” and includes Iraq’s Diyala province to Syria’s Aleppo.

“The situation in the region develops quickly and requires intensive discussions. I believe that we’ll discuss the processes in the region in a sincere atmosphere,” said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.
