Thumb injury could keep Young out for Lakers start

Los Angeles Lakers guard Nick Young will undergo surgery Monday to repair a torn right thumb ligament and could miss the start of the NBA season, the team announced Saturday.

Young suffered the injury during a practice workout this past week and an MRI exam Friday revealed the complete ligament tear.

The Lakers re-signed the 29-year-old backcourt standout to a four-year deal worth more than $21 million (16.78 million euros) in July after he scored a career-high 17.9 points over 64 games last season in his first campaign with his hometown team.

Young has averaged 12.2 points over 480 career NBA games with Washington, Philadelphia, the Los Angeles Clippers and Lakers.
