Sept. 2 (UPI) — Jannik Sinner needed just 81 minutes to sweep into the 2025 U.S. Open quarterfinals, leading his foe to call him “A.I.-generated” due to his robotic dominance.
The top-ranked Italian edged No. 24 Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan 8-2 in aces and 24-13 in winners in the straight-sets win Monday in Flushing, N.Y. He totaled just one double fault and 16 unforced errors, compared to Bublick’s respective 13 and 31.
Before the match, Bublik told ESPN that Sinner was “like an A.I. generated player.” He took to Instagram after the straight-sets loss and wrote “A.I.” on the social media platform.
“I just tried to stay as consistent as possible and I think that was the main key,” Sinner told reporters after the 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 triumph.
Sinner, who is vying to appear in his fifth-consecutive major final, broke Bublik eight times in his fourth-round victory. Bublik failed to convert his lone break point chance, which came in the third set of the lopsided loss.
Sinner will meet fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti (No. 10) in the quarterfinals. Musetti advanced with a straight-sets win over No. 44 Jaume Munar of Spain. The winner of the Musetti-Sinner match will take on No. 27 Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada or No. 8 Alex de Minaur of Australia in the semifinals.
Auger-Aliassime and de Minaur each advanced with straight-sets fourth-round victories. Auger-Aliassime ousted No. 15 Andrey Rublev of Russia. De Minaur swept No. 435 Leandro Riedi of Switzerland.
No. 2 Iga Swiatek of Poland was the highest-ranked woman to advance on Day 9 of the final Grand Slam of the tennis season. She needed just 64 minutes to weep her fourth-round foe, No. 12 Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia.
Swiatek will meet American Amanda Anisimova (No. 9), who she beat in the Wimbledon 2025 finale, in the quarterfinals. Anisimova needed just 75 minutes to win her fourth-round match against No. 22 Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil. The American held advantages of 5-1 in aces and 27-5 in winners in the 6-0, 6-3 win.
The winner of the Anisimova-Swiatek quarterfinal will battle No. 24 Naomi Osaka of Japan or No. 13 Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic in the semifinals.
Osaka upset No. 3 Coco Gauff of the United States in the fourth round. She needed just 64 minutes to pull off the stunning 6-3, 6-2 win at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Osaka and Gauff fired three aces apiece in the fourth-round meeting. Osaka converted 4 of 4 break point chances against the American. Gauff failed to earn a break point opportunity and logged 33 unforced errors, compared to Osaka’s 12.
“I thought that was a good performance from me serving,” Gauff told reporters. “Off the ground I think I just made way too many mistakes, way too many errors, which I feel like that’s the part of my game that I felt the most confident in coming into the tournament.
“It’s disappointing. For sure it was not the level that I wanted to bring, but it is a step in the right direction I feel, and I think emotionally how much this week was, I think [Monday] I just stepped in, and I maybe was a little bit empty.”
Muchova beat No. 28 Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine in a three-set match which lasted nearly three hours Monday in Flushing.
No. 4 Jessica Pegula of the United States will meet No. 62 Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic in the first women’s singles quarterfinal at 11:30 a.m. EDT Tuesday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will take on No. 60 Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic in another women’s quarterfinal Tuesday night.
The winners from those matches will meet in the semifinals.
No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain will battle No. 21 Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic in the first men’s quarterfinal of Day 10. No. 4 Taylor Fritz of the United States will meet No. 7 Novak Djokovic of Serbia in Tuesday’s other men’s quarterfinal.
