USA hockey’s Lamoureux-Davidson nets two, breaks Olympic record

Feb. 13 (UPI) — Team USA’s Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson scored two goals in six seconds, setting an Olympic record in a 5-0 win over the Olympic Athletes from Russia Tuesday in women’s hockey at the Winter Games.

Lamoureux-Davidson netted both scores in the second period of the preliminary round Group A victory. The record was previously held by Sweden’s Carl Goran Oberg, who scored two goals in eight seconds at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, Calif. Team USA is now 2-0 in the tournament in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

“It was pretty special,” Lamoureux-Davidson told NBC Olympics after the game. “I had no idea until after the game [that she broke the record] when someone else mentioned it.”

Kacey Bellamy started the scoring for the United States, beating Russian goalkeeper Valeria Tarakanova with a wrist shot at 13:41 in the first frame. Bellamy scored off of a Lamoureux-Davidson assist.

Lamoureux-Davidson got involved after her sister, Monique Lamoureux-Davidson, took a shot from the right side of the ice. Lamoureux-Davidson gathered a rebound from the shot and flipped it past Tarakanova for a 2-0 lead for the Americans.

Then came the prettiest goal of the game.

Lamoureux-Davidson took the puck off of a face-off for a breakaway. She skated all the way to the keeper before throwing a nasty deke and netting the third American score with a backhanded strike.

Team USA faces Canada at 10:10 p.m. Wednesday in another preliminary round matchup.
