Barack Obama can’t help himself. Without a teleprompter, he consistently reveals his secret obsessions. One of them is George W. Bush. Obama spoke at the New Amsterdam Theater in Times Square, and referring to his opponent in the upcoming election, he referred to Mitt Romney as George, which was Romney’s father’s name. The former Romney was the governor of Michigan and a candidate for president in 1968. Obama said, “We are not going back to a set of policies that say you’re on your own and that’s essentially the theory of the other side. You know, George Romney.”
The audience apparently roared with laughter, which must have ruffled Obama’s feathers. Obama’s verbal gaffes are commonplace, despite his reputation for rhetorical fluency. More interesting, however, is the George slip. Obama has made his presidential career bashing George W. Bush, and it seems more likely that Obama, in seeking someone to blame, would blurt out the name George automatically than be referencing a man whom he never encountered in his life. It may seem as if Obama was mixing up Mitt Romney with his father, but there’s no question when it comes to names, George hovers near the front of Obama’s brain.
