Poll: Majority of Americans Oppose Giving Illegal Immigrants Legal Status

A new poll shows that a majority of Americans believe those currently living illegally in the United States should not be given legal status.

According to a new Washington Post/ABC poll, 50 percent of Americans say that illegal immigrants should not be given the right to live and work in the United States legally.

Forty six percent of Americans feel otherwise.

The latest poll stands in sharp contrast with a poll in July that showed 55 percent of Americans supporting a path for citizenship for illegal immigrants and only 41 percent opposed.

Thirty six percent of Americans said that they were less likely to vote for a congressional candidate that supported a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, while only 27 said they were more likely. Thirty four percent said that it wouldn’t make much difference.

Only 31 percent approve of President Obama’s handling of the immigration reform issue, according to the poll, while 59 percent disapprove.

Obama’s disapproval rating on immigration reform has increased 18 points since May 2013.
