House Speaker John Boehner is celebrating a major political victory after his “Cromnibus” bill passed the House by a slim margin with the help of House Democrats.
In a statement, Boehner praised the bill as “responsible” and “bipartisan” legislation that would keep the government open, even though 67 Republicans voted against it. Fifty-seven Democrats voted for the legislation, helping it pass.
In a nod to conservative opposition, Boehner vowed an immigration fight in 2015, when Congress returns with a majority in both houses of Congress.
“[B]y the House’s action, we are setting up a direct challenge to the president’s unilateral actions on immigration next month, when there will be new Republican majorities in both chambers,” he announced. “The Senate should act on this bipartisan legislation in short order.”
The legislation now goes to the Senate for consideration.
