On February 23, a burglary suspect allegedly kicked in an interior door and charged a Catawba County, North Carolina, homeowner only to be shot with a 12 gauge and killed.

A second suspect fled when the first was shot.

According to WCNC, homeowner Bruce Fox heard a window break on the back of his house and retrieved his gun. He then called police, only to have one of the suspects “[kick] in a door leading to the hallway” and run toward him, getting shot in the chest.

Catawba Sheriff Coy Reid said Fox “was afraid that this suspect was going to harm him or harm his wife so he has a right to protect himself and he did.”

Ernest White is one of Fox’s neighbors, and he commented on the incident by saying, “It don’t make me feel good at all but he got what he deserved if he was breaking in.”

Police are still searching for the second suspect.
