WH Spox: Adding Biden as VP ‘Smartest Decision’ Obama Has Ever Made in Politics

Monday at the White House press briefing, press secretary Josh Earnest was asked about the possibility of Vice President Joe Biden making an announcement to run for the Democratic nomination, which would pit him against another former high-ranking Democratic cabinet official in former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Earnest did not outright say President Barack Obama would support Biden over Clinton, but he did note how much value Obama sees in Biden and called Obama’s 2008 decision to ask him to be his running mate Obama’s “smartest” political decision.

“There’s not an insignificant ‘if’ in that question and I think that is what everybody is pretty interested to find out – is what is the decision the vice president is going to make,” Earnest said. “The president has indicated it is his view that the decision he made, I guess seven years ago now, to add Joe Biden to the ticket as his running mate was the smartest decision he has ever made in politics. And I think that should give you some sense of the president’s view of Vice President Biden’s aptitude for the top job.”
