Eight days before the New Hampshire primary, a new poll of likely primary voters finds GOP candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders leading by substantial margins.
According to a University of Massachusetts Lowell/7News tracking poll released Monday, Trump is leading the Republican field by 26 percentage points. Sanders is leading Democrats by 31 percentage points and is boasting nearly nearly twice as much support of his main opponent, Hillary Clinton.
The poll found that Trump has 38 percent support of likely Republican primary voters. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) follows with 12 percent. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Ohio Gov. John Kasich are tied in third with 9 percent. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) is in fourth with 8 percent, then New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at 7 percent, neurosurgeon Ben Carson and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) are tied in sixth place with 3 percent, Carly Fiorina has 2 percent and Rick Santorum has 1 percent of likely GOP primary voters.
Likely Democratic primary voters prefer Sanders over the rest of the field 61 percent to Clinton’s 30 percent and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley’s 1 percent.
The poll of 1,413 New Hampshire registered voters — 442 Democratic primary likely voters and 461 Republican primary likely voters — was conducted from January 29 – January 31 and has a margin of error of +/-5.1 percent for likely Republican voters and +/-5.3 percent for likely Democratic voters.
