Obama Reminisces, Makes Alien Jokes at Final Appearance at Congressional Hispanic Caucus Dinner

A nostalgic President Obama lamented his gray hair, joked about pirates, asteroids, aliens, and even managed to take a shot at former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin over comments she made nearly eight years ago during his speech at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus dinner in Washington DC on Thursday.

Obama said that he was “having trouble accepting that this is my final trip here as President,” before launching into a series of jokes.

“It’s hard to believe that it was eight years ago that I came here as a candidate for this office,” Obama remarked. “And I had no gray hair. I said that we could create opportunity not just for those at the very top but for everyone who was willing to work hard. So they could afford health care and college and retirement and give their kids a better life. What Sarah Palin called that hopey changey stuff.”

While listing a number of statistics and accomplishments, the President paused to say, “thanks, Obama,” to laughs from the crowd. “You had fiscal showdowns and government shutdowns and pandemics and oil spills and pirates,” Obama said listing some of the difficult events that took place during his Presidency. “Y’all remember the pirates? I mean the only thing we haven’t had to deal with is the asteroid or the Aliens.” After someone in the crowd commented Obama joked, “That’s true, good point, I shouldn’t have mentioned the aliens.”

It hasn’t always been the friendliest venue for President Obama. He was heckled during the Hispanic Caucus dinner in 2014 when one of the attendees interrupted the President’s speech by yelling, “What happened to change we can believe in?”
