Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid claims that Hillary Clinton lost the presidency and Democrats lost several Senate races due to FBI Director James Comey’s October decision to relaunch the investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server during her time as secretary of state.
Reid was asked in a CNN interview that aired on Monday if Comey “singlehandedly” cost Clinton the election. After debating over the term singlehandedly, Reid replied, “I’ll say singlehandedly, had [Comey] not written that letter a week or so before the election, [Clinton] would have won, we would have picked up at least two more Senate seats.”
After a lengthy FBI investigation, Comey announced in July that he would not recommend charges be filed against Clinton, but then in October, upon discovery of new emails, Comey wrote a letter to eight Democrat and Republican members of Congress announcing his intention to reopen the probe. The new emails were found during an investigation into Anthony Weiner, the scandal-ridden husband of Clinton confidant and aide, Huma Abedin.
“Comey helped Trump significantly,” Reid told the interviewer. “A week before the election, he came out and um with this, ‘oh we got this, found some more emails.’”
Clinton lost in what has been called an electoral college “landslide” for now President-elect Donald Trump. Trump broke the Democrats’ “Blue Wall,” claiming several states that have reliably voted for the Democratic Party’s presidential nominees in recent history.
“It’s obvious [Comey] was a partisan in all this,” Reid alleged on CNN.
As for the Wikileaks revelations that also rocked the Democratic Party during the campaign, Reid went so far as to accuse not only the Russians for involvement, but also Wikileaks of “coordinating this, obviously, from, with the Trump folks and the Russians.”
