Gun control proponent Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense, has aborted her political aspirations but makes clear she will continue to fight for further restrictions on the Second Amendment.

Shannon Watts’s possible Congressional run was anticipated after she relocated from the Midwest to Boulder, Colorado. But on September 26, The Denver Post announced that Watts was pulling out of contention.

According to the Post, Watts was considering a run to replace Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO-2), who is leaving Congress to run for Governor of Colorado. Ken Toltz — another Boulder gun-control proponent and “former failed candidate” — is running for Polis’s seat.

Watts announced she was pulling out of the race by saying, “I’m grateful to the support I received as I spent the summer considering a run for office in Colorado, particularly from women who are hoping a female candidate enters what is currently a race of all-male candidates. While Colorado has a significant amount of women represented in our state legislature, we need more women in leadership roles like governor and our members of Congress.”

She indicated that she ultimately decided her anti-Second Amendment work is more important than ever because of President Donald Trump’s pro-Second Amendment stance. She said she also wants to encourage more women to run for office, even as she gave up on her current opportunity to run.

The Post surveyed the landscape without Watts as a candidate and reported, “Watts’ decision means she won’t be a force in the race.”
