In a desperate attempt to appeal to Trump’s populist base, Virginia Democrat gubernatorial candidate Ralph Northam flip-flopped on his anti-Trump rhetoric, telling Virginians in an ad that he will “work with him.”
With just one month before the November Virginia gubernatorial election, Democrat candidate Ralph Northam flip-flopped on his rhetoric towards President Donald Trump. Ralph Northam faces a tough election next month. Northam and Republican candidate Ed Gillespie remain virtually tied for the November election at 42 percent each.
Northam viciously attacked the president during the Democratic primaries. Northam said, “I’ve been listening carefully to Donald Trump, and I think he’s a narcissistic maniac.”
Northam even promised to keep Trump’s politics “on the other side of the Potomac.”
Now, Northam decided to mirror Trump’s populist rhetoric, labeling himself above party politics. In a recent campaign ad, the Democrat candidate said, “As a doctor, nobody ever asks if I’m a Democrat or a Republican, they just want my help.”
Northam added, “So if Donald Trump is helping Virginia, then I’ll work with him.”
Not only does this admission amount to a reversal of Northam’s rhetoric towards Trump, it also mirrors similar attacks that Virginia Democrats have used against Ed Gillespie, when he suggested that the he will work with the president and the Republican majority in Congress.
Gillespie said, “Having a governor who can work with a Republican House, a Republican Senate, President Trump, Vice President Pence, the Trump Administration — I think is an asset for us in Virginia.”
Gillespie responded to these accusations in a tweet, “Wow! RalphNortham attacking me for saying I’ll work w/ Trump Admin to keep Norfolk largest naval base in world…”
“I want to lead Virginia. RalphNortham wants to lead the #Resistance,” Gillespie added.
