Pro-life leaders hand-delivered a letter to (Taoiseach) Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, urging him to protect his country’s 8th amendment.

Varadkar, who is visiting the White House for its annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration, received a letter signed by 17 pro-life leaders, including the March for Life and Americans United for Life (AUL).

The letter states:

Planned Parenthood lawyer Julie Kay called Ireland, ‘The Jewel in the crown of the pro-life movement.’ But Ireland isn’t just a jewel for the pro-life movement, it is a beacon of hope for the entire world. Ireland has become one of the leaders in demonstrating life-affirming laws and medical treatment. This is something to be protected and hailed—not something to be repealed. The 8th amendment should be applauded not repealed. You have the power to continue Ireland’s excellence in life-affirming laws and healthcare.

Over 30 Irish children per day are spared from abortion due to the 8th amendment, states Youth Defence.

The pro-life leaders add that Ireland’s 8th amendment “has helped make Ireland one of the safest places in the world for pregnant women.”

“According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Ireland has one of the lowest maternal mortality rates in the world—and this is without abortion,” the leaders note. “Experienced practitioners and researchers in obstetrics and gynecology from all over the world have applauded Ireland’s 8th amendment and made it clear that women and their children are better off without abortion.”

Finally, they warn that repealing the 8th amendment could result in Ireland’s own Roe v. Wade—a decision that has led to the abortion of over 55 million unborn American lives.

“Americans United for Life is standing firm with our fellow pro-life leaders in sending a clear message to Prime Minister Varadkar—uphold the law of your land and do not make the same mistake America made in 1973,” said AUL president Catherine Glenn Foster.

The Irish Cabinet formally approved a referendum on whether the 8th amendment should be repealed on May 25th. Varadkar said he is advocating a “yes” vote, arguing that Irish women are traveling abroad to have abortions.

As Breitbart News reported in August, a leaked memo from revealed George Soros has been funding pro-abortion groups through his Open Society Foundations with the intention of turning Ireland—long considered the “jewel in the crown of the pro-life movement”—into a pro-abortion country.

“With one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the world, a win there could impact other strongly Catholic countries in Europe, such as Poland, and provide much-needed proof that change is possible, even in highly conservative places,” the document stated.
