NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is reportedly close to extending his contract another five years, according to Daniel Kaplan of Sports Business Journal.
The commissioner’s current contract ends at the conclusion of the 2019 season, but the extension would keep him in place through the 2024 season.
A salary agreement, however, will likely take longer to resolve, considering some owners have recently talked of driving Goodell’s salary down.
According to Mike Florio, the NFL’s Finance and Compensation Committee recently talked about cutting Goodell’s salary as the league mulled retaining him as commish.
Goodell’s compensation has already skyrocketed, going from $10 million in 2006 to a whopping $44 million by 2012. Though, his compensation dropped each year after that.
The commissioner may have a tumultuous extension, though, if the expected players strike occurs once the current CBA expires after the 2020 season.
According to player representative DeMaurice Smith, a lockout or strike is “almost a virtual certainty” once the contract runs out in 2020.
