Texas AG OK’s Prayer in Court Over Atheist Group’s Objections

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has issued an opinion stating it does not violate the Establishment Clause to open a court session with the statement “God save the State of Texas and this Honorable Court” or to open court with a prayer, or have a volunteer chaplain program to facilitate those prayers. An atheist group from Wisconsin had complained about the practice.

A school district is drafting a general policy to ban all items that depict the Confederate flag, after suspending nearly two dozen students for wearing clothing that featured that flag. The Montgomery County School Board in Virginia voted unanimously to draft a policy that would ban all clothing, emblems, decals, or jewelry representing the Confederate flag from all school property in the county.

A Texas district court judge declared the state’s online sexual solicitation of a minor law unconstitutional on Wednesday afternoon. The judge ruled that the law violates the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution regarding freedom of speech.
