Chinese Officials Burn Bibles, Close Churches in Crackdown on Christianity

The Chinese government’s campaign to “Sinicize” organized religion – in other words, make religion completely subordinate to the Communist Party – grew more aggressive this year and featured the destruction of Bibles, crosses, and entire churches. Religious freedom activists call it the worst crackdown on Christianity since religious freedom was nominally granted by the 1982 Chinese constitution.

China Blames ‘Reckless’ Local Officials for Mosque Demolition Protest

Beijing on Thursday blamed “reckless” local officials for sparking a massive protest against the demolition of a large mosque in the city of Weizhou. Communist officials insisted the situation is “under control” and local Muslims are now in a “good mood,” but they never quite got around to clarifying whether the mosque will indeed be demolished.

China Denies Reported Military Base in Afghanistan

The South China Morning Post reported on Tuesday that China is constructing a military base in a remote region of Afghanistan close to Xinjiang, the troubled province where much of China’s Muslim population lives. Both Chinese and Afghan officials quickly denied the report and said China is merely helping to train Afghan counter-terrorist forces.

Congress Urges Trump to Sanction China for Muslim Persecution

A bipartisan group of 17 members of Congress reportedly sent a letter Wednesday to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin requesting that they impose sanctions on China in response to the mass arrest and detention of Muslims in western Xinjiang province, where they are subject to torture in “political re-education camps.”

China Imposes ‘Core Socialist Values’ in Muslim Uighur Elementary Schools

The Global Times, house organ of the Chinese Communist Party, cheerfully reported on Wednesday that students at the No. 7 Elementary School of Kuqa County have been “encouraged to learn Chinese calligraphy and read classical Chinese literature as part of a program to boost traditional Chinese culture and core socialist values.” What makes this interesting is that Kuqa County is located in the restless Xinjiang province, home of the Uighur Muslim minority.
