Prime Minister David Cameron has announced that the United Kingdom would direct Internet service providers to block all pornographic content to households unless they specifically opted in to receive it, the BBC reports. Cameron’s initiative would also prohibit pornography depicting rape. The goal, he says, is to restore the dignity of women and to provide a “real deterrent” to children’s exposure to pornography.
In a speech Monday, Cameron said that the Internet should not be given a “special status” and that it should not be “beyond debate” to “raise concerns about how people should access the internet or what should be on it.” He identified two challenges his government would address: one, illegal material such as child pornography; two, legal pornographic material that was being accessed improperly by children.
“By the end of this year, when someone sets up a new broadband account the settings to install family friendly filters will be automatically selected,” Cameron said. “If you just click ‘next’ or ‘enter,’ then the filters are automatically on. And, in a really big step forward, all the ISPs have rewired their technology so that once your filters are installed, they will cover any device connected to your home Internet account.”
