J. Edgar or Herbert Hoover? Don't Ask CBS News

On the Sunday, October 26, broadcast of CBS’ Face the Nation, guest Philip Shenon discussed a 1964 letter written by long-time FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. But to illustrate the Hoover quote, CBS put up a graphic showing President Herbert Hoover, instead of the FBI’s J. Edgar Hoover.

Shenon was talking about a letter Hoover wrote to the Warren Commission in 1964. The Warren Commission was investigating the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and Hoover’s letter informed the commissioners that Lee Harvey Oswald told the Cuban embassy in Mexico that he intended to kill Kennedy.

CBS cut from the studio to show a graphic of a portion of the Hoover quote. But accompanying the quote was a photograph of president Herbert Hoover, a man decidedly not FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover.

Apparently the folks at CBS News are not aware that President Herbert Hoover and the FBI’s director in 1964 are not the same person.
