For five full years, we watched Democrats and the mighty force of the mainstream media do everything in their power to “call into question” President George W. Bush’s leadership as commander-in-chief while tens, and even hundreds of thousands of troops were “in harm’s way.” Back then, it was a vicious media blood sport and unrelenting. Today, however, if just one person, like former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, dares to do the same to President Obama, suddenly NBC’s Matt Lauer is wondering if such a thing is “dangerous or dishonorable“:

As this criticism is leveled by you in the book of the commander-in-chief, the acting commander-in-chief, at a time when some 40,000 U.S. troops are in harm’s way, do you think that by calling him into question at this stage it is either dangerous or dishonorable?
Lauer then follows up by expressing concern that Gates’ book might “undermine” Obama’s “credibility with the troops.”
But you don’t think it undermines his credibility with the troops he is commander-in-chief of right now?
If criticizing and questioning a sitting commander-in-chief during a time of war is “dishonorable and dangerous,” that is a brand new NBC network policy — and my guess is that it was instituted sometime around January of 2009.
