Ramos to Wasserman Schultz: ‘Does the Democratic Party Lack Diversity?’

Univision and Fusion anchor Jorge Ramos asked DNC Chair Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) “Does the Democratic Party lack diversity?” on Tuesday’s edition of Fusion’s “America with Jorge Ramos.”

Ramos asked, “Does the Democratic Party — when I was watching the debate, [what] I was thinking is ‘Does the Democratic Party lack diversity?’ I didn’t see a Latino, or an African-American, or an Asian on that stage.”

Wasserman Schultz “Well, we have Latinos and African — First of all, our president of the United States, who is a Democrat, is African-American. So, certainly we have an absolute demonstrated commitment to diversity, because out party nominated the first African-American, and then Americans elected him not once, but twice.. If you look at our party up and down the ballot, from the way that we select delegates, to the way we elect members of the Democratic National Committee, to the elected officials, and their diversity that we have in this country, there is overwhelmingly more diversity up and down the ballot when it comes to Democrats, Hispanics, Asian/Pacific Islanders, African-Americans, women, the LGBT community. We are the party of diversity. The Republicans are essentially the party of a monolithic view that is narrow-minded, that says, let’s take our country backwards. And that’s why, when it comes to the issues that are important to minority communities, they overwhelmingly support Democratic policies and will continue to.”
