During a Friday appearance on ESPN Radio’s “Golic and Wingo,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell brushed off the drop in ratings for his league, saying he “wouldn’t switch ratings with anybody.”
“I don’t think you can find anything on television where the ratings aren’t down,” Goodell told co-host Mike Golic. “If you look at it, we’re actually down less than anybody else in the ratings. We’re actually — the important thing that I look at is 10 years ago, of the top 50 television shows, the NFL was 11th. This year, we were 37 in the top 50 shows. So, we actually are getting stronger in a different environment.”
He added, “[Y]ou can’t simply just look at ratings anymore. It’s much deeper than that, it’s much broader than that. People are consuming media more, particularly live content, but on different platforms.”
When pressed about how the NBA’s ratings are going up while the NFL’s is on the way down,
“I’ll take our ratings any day,” stated Goodell. “If you look on a Sunday afternoon, we’re doing ratings that are extraordinarily well, and so from our standpoint, I won’t change and switch ratings with anybody, I promise you that. And I think anybody in sports would say that.”
