Donald Trump: Doctors Performing Illegal Abortions Should be ‘Held Legally Responsible, Not the Woman’

GOP frontrunner Donald Trump issued a press release regarding abortion on Wednesday afternoon.

Trump stated in a campaign press release:

If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman,” Trump stated in a campaign press release. “The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb. My position has not changed — like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions.

The issued statement comes after reports of a leaked exchange between Trump and MSNBC’s Chris Matthews for a town hall that will air on MSNBC Wednesday at 8 p.m.

CBS News reporter Sopan Deb posted the alleged transcript on Twitter:

Matthews reportedly asks Trump if a woman should be punished for having an abortion.

“The answer is there has to be some form of punishment,” Trump reportedly replies.
