25K Nevadans Will Lose Unemployment Benefits Without Budget Deal

If Congress fails to reach an agreement in the fiscal cliff negotiations, 25,000 Nevadans will lose unemployment benefits on January 2.

According to the Nevada Division of Employment Security, federal unemployment aid that extends Nevada’s state unemployment plan for 25,000 people, will expire if Congress does not reach a deal on the budget. In addition, another 1,000 unemployed Nevadan’s benefits will expire the following week and they would not be eligible for an extension as well.

Nevada’s state program provides unemployment benefits up to 26 weeks and Congress extended those benefits to a total of 73 weeks. Those benefits come to to an end on December 29.
