During a House committee grilling of Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius over Obamacare shortcomings, Rep. Ralph Hall (R-TX), the oldest congressman in the House at 90 years of age, said that he thought he saw Sebelius riding a tricycle through Meade, Kansas when he was in third grade.
The exchange began normally enough. “You surely looked ahead and you have some estimate of what is going to happen, what it’s going to cost [to fix the website],” Hall asked. Sebelius said there were indeed “obligated amounts” to contractors, including $197 million obligated to last through March 2014 to CGI.
Hall then joked, “I’m going to try to be here in 2014 to make sure that your testimony’s correct, okay?” She looked puzzled. He then said, “I’m just joking with you.” She looked peeved, and said, “Okay.” He followed up by asking her if she was born in Meade, Kansas. “I was not,” she replied. “I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. I married a Kansan and went to Kansas.”
Hall said, “I was in third grade there and I thought I saw you on a tricycle there one day.” Sebelius smiled, “Well, it was an illusion.”
Given that Hall is 90 years old, and would presumably have been seven in third grade, that would put Sebelius at approximately 86 years of age. The Secretary is 65.
