FLASHBACK--2007 HillaryCare Ad: 'Lets You Keep Your Coverage If You Like It'

Last week, former President Bill Clinton denounced President Barack Obama’s lie that if Americans liked their healthcare plans they could keep them under Obamacare. However, information from Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign shows her healthcare plan would have been nearly identically to Obamacare, and she also made the promise that Americans could keep their current insurance under her plan.

This past week, Bill Clinton took a direct shot at Obama over Obamacare and his promise that if Americans liked their healthcare plans they could keep them under Obamacare. Clinton said that "even if it takes a change in the law, the president should honor the commitment that the federal government made to those people and let them keep what they got.”

But Hillary Clinton’s 2008 plan, laid out in an advertisement that aired in early presidential primary states in 2007, promised Americans they could “keep your coverage if you like it.” The ad also claimed the plan would provide “affordable choices if you don’t” and “covers every American”—echoing the claims of Obamacare.

According to a September 2007 story from the Associated Press, Clinton aired the 30-second ad in Iowa and New Hampshire when she was running against Obama for the Democratic nomination for president. The ad was a flashback to her healthcare reform efforts as First Lady during Bill Clinton’s presidency. “On Tuesday, Clinton began airing a 30-second ad statewide in Iowa and New Hampshire promoting her new health care plan,” the AP wrote. “The ad reminds viewers of her failed effort to pass universal health care in the early 1990s, trying to portray a thwarted enterprise as one of vision.”

The Washington Post reported at the time that Clinton’s healthcare proposal, like Obamacare, relied on an individual mandate--a fact the AP noted was “glossed over” in the ad.

Hillary Clinton’s top policy adviser, Neera Tanden, described the 2007 ad at the time just how Obamacare was described and sold to the public. “It puts the consumer in the driver's seat by offering more choices and lowering costs,” Tanden said, according to the Washington Post. “If you like the plan you have, you keep it. If you're one of tens of millions of Americans without coverage or don't like the coverage you have, you will have a choice of plans to pick from and you'll get tax credits to help pay for it.”
