There will be a new face at the third debate in the race for U.S. Senate in North Carolina, Thursday evening.
The Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate Sean Haugh, the pizza deliveryman who some believe could be a spoiler for the Republican come Election Day, will appear with Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) and Republican state House Speaker Thom Tillis in a televised debate hosted by the League of Women Voters and Wilmington’s WECT.
“This is really my opportunity to present my message — the Libertarian message — to the voters state-wide and especially sitting next to my two opponents in contrast to what they have to offer,” Haugh — who stands for such things as ending all wars, reducing the debt, and open borders — said in an interview Wednesday with Breitbart News.
“My debate prep is simply to get in a good psychological space, so that I am really calm and collected and able to just concentrate on positive reasons to vote for me and to offer a perspective on the issues I think is missing in the race,” he said.
The first two debates featured just the two major candidates, Thursday evening will be Haugh’s first debate this cycle — something he said could be to his advantage because there is now a “pent up demand.”
“My initial perk, I guess, for people is that I am not either [Tillis or Hagan],” Haugh explained.
Haugh, who says he thinks Tillis should get out of the race and throw his support to him, told Breitbart that he does not plan to go negative against his opponents.
“People will be able to see how I am different simply by what I have to say,” the pizza deliveryman added.
“I’m just going to completely concentrate on getting the voters the opportunity to get to know me as a person and get to know my views and my issues what I stand for in a positive way,” he said. “Because not only are people really hungry for a positive campaign, this campaign is just so incredibly negative and all this negative campaigning has accomplished is to convince all of the voters ‘Oh you’re right, I don’t want to vote for either of you.'”
Haugh said while he was not intending to watched Tuesday night’s debate he ended up watching it without sound at a sports bar in Durham called Satisfactions.
“I just watched the body language really and I would have to say based on that alone it seemed to me Kay Hagan did a much better job. She just seemed in control,” he said.
