James Taylor: We Need to 'Sacrifice' Guns for the Children

After singing America the Beautiful at President Obama’s second inauguration, James Taylor spoke with reporters regarding gun control and said, “We need to make some sacrifice[s] to our freedoms.”

Taylor said he believes even gun owners understand that “need to make some sacrifices to what we might want to have, in order to safeguard our children.”

With all due respect, Mr. Taylor has missed the fact that we’ve been making sacrifices via “gun free zones,” and what has that done for us?

In those areas–like the one at Lone Star College on Jan. 21 and the one at Sandy Hook Elementary on Dec. 14–we not only sacrificed types of guns, we sacrificed all guns and therefore all reasonable means of self-defense. As a result, “our children” are sitting ducks.

Taylor admits the Founding Fathers wanted us to be able to arm ourselves, but he adds, “I don’t think they would have agreed that we should have capacity to do the damage that we do have.”

Note to those who are tempted to think like Taylor does: We make a huge mistake if we view law-abiding citizens and criminals through the same lense. Criminals use guns to do damage; law-abiding citizens use guns to defend life and liberty. These two are worlds apart.
