Kevin Spacey looks at the media landscape, furrows his Oscar-approved brow, and wonders why President Barack Obama isn’t getting more credit for his work in the Oval Office. Never mind the anemic economy, the still roiling Middle East, the troubles in Syria and elsewhere–not to mention the gargantuan debt.
The star of Netflix’s Emmy-nominated House of Games wants the press to consider his historic wins.
President Obama will go down as having passed some of the most historic bills in the history of this country,” Spacey told Hot Press magazine in a recent interview. “That despite constant knee-jerk opposition from the Republicans. A lot of people don’t realize how much he’s done in the most difficult of circumstances.
That knee jerk opposition isn’t always easy to see. Consider that Obama got his health care reform passed while his party controlled both Houses. He even had to coerce members of his own party to approve the reform, helping phrases like “Cornhusker Kickback” enter the news cycle.
Said reform’s reputation with the public continues to sink as even several labor unions decry it and some of its key provisions are delayed until after the 2014 elections.
Historic? Maybe “huge train wreck” is more like it, to quote a certain Democrat.
One of the many myths within the Age of Obama bubble is that the opposition party simply won’t let him get anything done. It’s as if Democrats fell into the fetal position during the eight years of the Bush administration. Opposing parties oppose. Great leaders find ways to bridge the two sides and strike compromises that work.
