Israel Shoots Down Hamas Drone as Hamas Claims to Have Multiple UAVs

Tel Aviv, Israel -- Monday morning, Israel detected and destroyed a Hamas drone flying over the skies of Ashdod, a city within close distance to the Gaza border. Israel utilized a Patriot Surface-to-Air (SAM) missile battery to shoot down the drone.

Hamas claims it has launched at least six Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) into Israel Monday. The Muslim Brotherhood terror group said that it has created three different drones, tasked for surveillance, as well as attack missions. Hamas officials said some of the drones are packed with explosives. A militant wing of Hamas, the al-Qassam Brigades, said they currently have a UAV in the skies over the IDF military headquarters in Tel Aviv. The IDF is reportedly skeptical of the claim.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was in Cairo Monday, pushing for the United Nations to intervene in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon of the notoriously anti-Israel United Nations said Jerusalem should not move into Gaza because “too many” Palestinian civilians have been killed.

A rocket barrage fired from Gaza into the civilian-populated city of Ashdod resulted in one missile crashing into an alleyway Monday; an eight-year-old Israeli boy sustained injuries.

An international coalition is forming, demanding Israel agree to a ceasefire with internationally designated terrorist group Hamas. According to British Foreign Secretary William Hague, “It is clear that we need urgent, concerted international action to secure a ceasefire, as was the case in 2012. I will discuss this with [US, French, and German foreign ministers] John Kerry, Laurent Fabius and Frank-Walter Steinmeier tomorrow [Sunday] in Vienna.”

Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon briefed the IDF on Jerusalem’s strategy going forward in Operation Protective Edge. He said

[Israel] is continuing to pound Hamas and its infrastructure. The damage to Hamas and to the other terror organizations in the Gaza Strip is severe. … When Hamas leaders come out of their hiding places they will discover the extent of the destruction and damage we have caused to the organization, in a way that will make them regret they embarked on a round of fighting with Israel.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called upon the Muslim world Monday to help “the oppressed people of Palestine, and prevent the Zionist regime from carrying out its crimes." He added that it is "the responsibility of all international organizations and all peace-loving countries around the world.” Meanwhile, Iran jailed eight of its citizens for daring to oppose the Ayatollah’s regime on Facebook. All eight were handed jail sentences ranging from eight to twenty-one years.
