A Yuba City, California woman of Sikh descent has made history by becoming the first female hailing from her ethnic background to be elected to City Council in the United States of America.
A teary-eyed Preet Didbal, 46, was sworn in by her daughter and with her mother by her side on Tuesday night, according to local NBC News affiliate in Sacramento KCRA.
Didbal was one of the first in her family to attend college. She worked hard to hoist herself up from very humble beginnings, working in the fields of Yuba City from a very young age. “We worked the field here. We never owned any property. We are the farm laborers who just raised ourselves up,” she said.

In addition to serving on the Yuba City Planning Commission for eight years, Didbal holds an associate’s degree in nutrition, a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a master’s in public administration.
Throughout her term, she plans to place her focus on children, education and public safety. Didbal has also proven to be an inspiration to young women who look up to her in light of her achievement, notes KCRA.
