Packers Release Charles Woodson, aka the Man who Beat Manning
Charles Woodson, the 2009 NFL Defensive Player of the year and former Heisman Trophy winner, has been released by the Green Bay Packers, the team he played for since the 2006 season.
A likely Hall of Famer, Woodson has accumulated 55 interceptions and 11 touchdowns in his NFL career and intends to join a contender after successful stints with the Oakland Raiders and the Packers.
Although Woodson’s coverage skills and raw speed are not what they used to be, the man who beat out Peyton Manning for the Heisman Trophy still has a lot to offer potential suitors.
From the Packers perspective, the decision to release Woodson was purely a financial decision. The former Michigan Wolverine, who has been very generous with his alma mater, would have cost Green Bay 10 million dollars next season.
