Rick Perry: Texas Would 'Love' to Have San Diego Chargers
Texas Governor Rick Perry said if the San Diego Chargers find it difficult to operate profitably in California, one of the team's options could be moving the franchise to San Antonio, Texas.
"If it gets so difficult for them to be able to operate, that’s always an option, but again you’d have to ask them," Perry said. " I have no indication that the Chargers are going to be coming to Texas anytime soon."
The U-T San Diego notes, though, that "the San Diego Chargers want a new stadium," "Perry is in California trying to bring jobs to Texas," and "San Antonio has the Alamo Dome, a stadium built in 1993 that could hold an NFL team."
In addition, Dean Spanos, the Chargers' owner, was one of Perry's chief fundraisers during his failed 2012 presidential campaign.
"You’d have to ask the Spanos family. Dean is a good friend and I would be lying if I didn’t tell you, come to Texas and we would love to have their athletic club there," Perry said. "But there’s a family whose been there forever."
