Phil Mickelson to Muirfield: 'You Won'

Always the showman and honest, Phil Mickelson had a simple message for the course setup at Muirfield after the second round of the Open Championship on Friday: “You won.”

“It was too much course for me,” Mickelson said to ESPN after shooting a 3-over 74 to be +1 for the tournament.

Mickelson slammed the course setup on Thursday, and he was in the afternoon groups that saw nobody shoot under part. He said he was looking forward to the weekend because everyone who is grouped together will be playing “in the same conditions.”

Mickelson, who missed his fair share of putts, including three-putting the par-3 16 for double bogey, said he putted “phenomenal” and his putting on the other holes “kept me in the tournament.”

He predicted the layout, the speedy greens that have been baked, and the changing winds on the course are so tough that there is going to “be carnage out there” on Saturday.
