Cruz Moves to Freeze Guantanamo Releases

Monday on the Senate floor, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) discussed new legislation he is filing this week that would temporally stop prisoner releases from Guantánamo Bay to give Congress time for oversight. Cruz said the legislation is in response to U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl prisoner swap for five Taliban top commanders. He proposed a six-month freeze on all prisoner transfers from Guantánamo and added the legislation also requires if the president disregards his legislation, all funds for any transfer would come directly from the budget of the executive office of the president.
