An atheist activist has posted a video to YouTube after the city of Deerfield Beach, Florida displayed a nativity scene near a firehouse. In the video, Chaz Stevens threatens to sue the city as he uses vulgar terminology to describe the images of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
According to Circa, Stevens decided to sue Deerfield Beach over the nativity scene after it denied him permission to erect a “Festivus” pole made of beer cans. The city reportedly had permitted Stevens’ Festivus display in the past, next to nativity scenes and menorahs, but this year decided that only displays reflecting the holidays could be erected.
Gov. Rick Scott, says Circa, allowed Stevens to place a Festivus pole inside the Florida state capitol, and Stevens posted a video of his six-foot tall construction.
“What’s the point? There is no point. It’s ridiculous,” Stevens reportedly said. “This is the most ridiculous thing I could come up with…This is about the separation of church and state.”
Festivus is a holiday created by Seinfeld character George Castanza’s father. It commemorates the things that have grieved you in the past year and is celebrated on December 23rd. The traditional Christmas “tree” is replaced by a “pole,” and the holiday mantra is “a Festivus for the rest of us.”
Stevens posted a second, less vulgar, YouTube video regarding the nativity display, apparently because his initial video offended many people.
