Curt Smith, author of a new biography about former President George H. W. Bush, said that Jeb Bush’s lenient stance on illegal immigration damages his electability.

“Anyone who says illegal immigration is an ‘act of love’ ought not to be president of the United States. I’d support him if he was nominated but I’m not sure he’s electable,” Smith told the Wall Street Journal, referring to an infamous comment Jeb made in a 2014 speech.

“Jeb is the old man’s favorite. But he’s been out of politics for ten years and it shows,” Smith, the author of George H.W. Bush: Character at the Core, added.

Smith’s comments come after a NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll revealed only four percent of middle class Americans believe that Jeb understands their values, compared to Obama at 22 percent.
