First Lady Michelle Obama is traveling to Japan tomorrow to promote her “Let Girls Learn” initiative, and YouTube is going with her.
After President Obama did three interviews with YouTube stars to promote his State of the Union address, the White House is again turning to a popular YouTube star, this time to promote the First Lady.
The First Lady’s chief of staff Tina Tchen explained to reporters that Michelle Obama will be joined in Japan by Michelle Phan, a makeup artist on YouTube who will be “asking Mrs. Obama the questions that come through on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram” about her trip.
Phan, who grew up as a Vietnamese-American teenager in Tampa, Fla., is famous for her videos of beauty and makeup tips and now has more than 7.5 million YouTube subscribers.
Tchen also clarified to reporters that the Obama daughters, Sasha and Malia, will not be traveling with the First Lady, as previously was reported by Japanese media outlets.
According to the White House, Mrs. Obama will travel to Japan and Cambodia.
During her trip, she plans to visit the Kiyomizu-Dera Buddhist Temple and the Fushimi Inari Shinto Shrinand and will meet with the Emperor and Empress of Japan.
