CBS Atlanta Targets Stores for ‘Gun Porn’ Magazines in View of Children

On November 3, CBS 46 in Atlanta continued their series titled, “The Gun Fight,” by lamenting that Walmart, Kroger, and Publix stores display “gun porn” on shelves that are easily accessible to children.

They describe “gun porn” as  magazines with “photos of guns” which are “[displayed]… in the same carefully posed and lighted manner as the models in traditional pornography.”

According to CBS 46, “gun porn” magazines contain “headlines” like “Don’t Be a Victim” and “The Ultimate Guide for Staying Alive.” The magazines often “include glossy covers with sexy young women armed and ready to shoot.” But they also point to the covers of other “gun porn” magazines that show men in inflatable rubber boats, paddling through rough waters in outdoor clothing with a rifle slung over their shoulder.

CBS 46 reporter Karyn Greer says, “Sexually explicit and tabloid magazines are kept on the top shelves of stores to keep them out of sight of precious young children, but gun magazines are in plain sight and easy reach for anyone to grab and take a peek.” To prove it, “CBS 46 went undercover to Publix, Kroger and Walmart to find the magazines,” and they discovered that gun magazines were at eye level more often than food and travel magazines.

They also discovered that gun magazines “[appear] to be more popular than travel and cooking magazines.”

CBS 46 took particular offense over the close proximity between a gun magazine display and a Dr. Seuss display in one store.
