Jill Abramson to teach at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., June 12 (UPI) —

Recently ousted New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson has signed on to be a visiting lecturer at Harvard University in the fall.

Abramson will begin as a visiting lecturer in Harvard’s English department in fall 2014 and teach in both the fall the and spring academic terms.

“I’m honored and excited to be teaching at Harvard in the coming academic year,” Abramson said in a statement.

“Narrative non-fiction journalism is more important than ever. Its traditions and how it is changing in the digital transition are fascinating areas of study.”

Diana Sorensen, Harvard’s dean of arts and humanities, welcomed the new hire, saying, “Harvard is delighted to welcome Jill Abramson to the English Department, where her students in the Writing Program will profit enormously from her insights, experience and brilliance.”

Abramson is the first woman to run the New York Times newsroom, a position she held until her sudden dismissal last month by publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. She graduated from Harvard in 1976 and has previously taught journalism at Yale and Princeton universities.
